È durata 60 giorni – ed è stata un successo – la missione sulle vette del Karakorum, realizzata per monitorare lo stato di salute del pianeta e quello dell’uomo in condizioni estreme. Iniziata il 10 di giugno (come vi avevamo raccontato qui), la spedizione ha preso il via dalla località pakistana di Askole a circa 3.000 metri di altitudine e, dopo un trekking di 90 km in cinque giorni e l’arrivo al campo base, la squadra ha effettuato i primi 10 giorni di acclimatamento insieme per poi dividersi su due obiettivi diversi. Da un lato, il biellese Gian Luca Cavalli, capo spedizione, insieme al peruviano e biellese di adozione Cesar Rosales, il medico biellese Donatella Barbera, e Dario Reinero del CAI di Valdagno, hanno scelto di affrontare prima il Broad Peak (8047m) spostandosi al relativo campo base; dall’altro lato, Matteo Sella (che fa parte dell’Eagle Team del CAI) e Tommaso Lamantia, alpinista di Varese e Accademico del CAI, hanno deciso di rimanere “concentrati” sul K2 (8611m), il tutto senza portatori d’alta quota e senza bombole d’ossigeno.

Le avverse condizioni meteo hanno reso difficili i primi 35 giorni di acclimatamento, ma a fine luglio, con il miglioramento del tempo, la squadra ha tentato le relative vette. Obiettivo riuscito a Lamantia sul K2 e a Cavalli e Rosales sul Broad Peak. Mentre, Matteo Sella ha raggiunto quota 8200m sul K2 e Reinero il colle del Broad Peak. La forza di volontà e la preparazione fisica hanno permesso di ottenere ottimi risultati nonostante gli imprevisti e le difficoltà che un ambiente estremo come questo può presentare in ogni momento.

“L’armonia all’interno del nostro gruppo è stata fondamentale” racconta Cavalli: “Pur in un ambiente ostile e sotto stress abbiamo sempre risolto qualsiasi conflitto e mantenuto alto il morale, anche nei momenti più difficili”. Un’esperienza carica di emozioni e insegnamenti: “Anche dopo una vita di alpinismo fare uno zaino ben fatto è difficilissimo. Per quanto ci si possa avvicinare, la perfezione in senso stretto non esiste” ha commentato Matteo Sella.

La spedizione ha contribuito a importanti studi scientifici che porteranno a una migliore comprensione delle condizioni umane in ambienti estremi e del cambiamento climatico. Sono stati infatti raccolti campioni di neve a diverse altitudini per analizzare la quantità di microplastiche presenti nell’ambiente e sono stati monitorati i parametri fisiologici degli alpinisti in alta quota. Sono state inoltre state realizzate alcune fotografie che verranno confrontate con gli scatti di Vittorio Sella del 1909.
