Se ripenso ai tempi delle scuole elementari e delle medie, ricordo sempre con grande apprensione il momento in cui la maestra ci assegnava il tema libero: “Scrivete di ciò che volete”, diceva con la magnanimità di chi pensa di farti un favore. E mentre lo diceva io mi paralizzavo. Oddio, di cosa voglio scrivere? L’orizzonte di tutte le possibili cose di cui avrei potuto parlare si stagliava di fronte a me e io non sapevo da che parte andare. Forse là ho capito che sarebbe stato meglio fare il giornalista che lo scrittore, di sicuro ho intuito che la libertà totale è più un veleno che un tonico per la creatività, così come lo è per il gioco. Il gioco è una delle attività più importanti dell’essere umano. Giochiamo fin da piccoli e – anche se crescendo magari pensiamo che non ci competa più – continuiamo a farlo anche da adulti. Nel gioco impariamo a socializzare, a metabolizzare ciò che ci succede, a conoscere noi stessi, ma soprattutto impariamo a gestire un set di regole che definisce i confini del gioco stesso. E senza quei confini il gioco non esisterebbe. Sarebbe come cercare di parlare senza un alfabeto e delle parole il cui senso sia condiviso con altre persone.

Vi ricordate i tempi di quando giocavate in un parco a nascondino oppure a mosca cieca o ancora a immaginare una finta famiglia con le bambole o altri giochi inventati sul momento? I primi minuti di ogni attività erano dedicati all’accettazione di tutti di ruoli e regole condivise, poi c’era sempre chi se ne inventava di nuove per non perdere, ma quella è un’altra storia. Anche la più sgangherata partita di calcetto fra ragazzi ha bisogno di zaini che delimitino una porta e il marciapiede che segnali il fallo laterale. E per quanto gli sviluppatori possano odiarli, spesso anche i limiti tecnici sono una favolosa molla per la creatività. Pensiamo ad esempio a Super Mario (nella foto sotto di Buddhika Weerasinghe / Getty Images): tutti ormai riconoscono il suo aspetto, la salopette con i colori sgargianti, i baffoni, il cappello. La maggior parte degli elementi che l’hanno reso un personaggio così noto e distinguibile nascono quando era arrivato il momento di disegnare il personaggio e bisognava fare i conti con le capacità grafiche dell’epoca.

Disegnare una bocca convincente con pochi pixel senza che sembrasse un orribile becco rosa era un’impresa impossibile. Ecco perché furono usati dei baffi per nasconderla e dare maggior carattere al personaggio. Lo stesso si può dire per i capelli, che da sempre sono una delle componenti più complesse da rendere in un videogioco. Quindi meglio usare un bel cappello. E i colori del suo vestito? Oggi ci sembra banale, ma animare una camminata in modo convincente potendo contare su pochi frame e pochissimi colori era complicato. Ecco perché il rosso e il blu sono perfetti per far capire che Mario si sta muovendo sullo schermo. Sono tantissimi gli esempi in cui la mancanza di un controllo creativo, di un limite, di un momento in cui qualcuno ha detto “ok, secondo me possiamo fermarci qua, perché se continuiamo ad aggiungere cose non la finiremo mai” hanno portato al disastro. Alcune volte quel disastro può diventare un capolavoro del cinema, altre volte ti ritrovi un videogioco che esce troppo tardi rispetto all’attuale livello tecnico e con sulle spalle così tanti anni di attesa che non può in alcun modo stare al passo con le aspettative. Se ci pensiamo, è un po’ lo stesso motivo, del tutto casuale, che ha reso grande Lo Squalo (nella foto sotto una scena del film - Credit: Universal Pictures courtesy of Getty Images). Il primo vero grande blockbuster e il film che ha proiettato Spielberg nell’Olimpo del cinema. Nei suoi progetti iniziali la creatura doveva vedersi molto di più, ma lo squalo meccanico costruito per le scene più cruente si rompeva continuamente. Spielberg fu quindi costretto a lavorare per sottrazione, lasciando che la presenza dello squalo fosse più intuita che palese.

Tantissime volte i limiti mi hanno salvato perché è nei limiti, nel saperci giocare, nel girare attorno alle boe che si articola il discorso e si può capire il valore delle nostre proposte creative. D’altronde cos’è la creatività se non un set finito di ispirazioni, idee e concetti che in qualche modo assimiliamo, smontiamo e rimontiamo in base a quello che ci serve in quel momento? Ad esempio io ora potrei divagare per pagine e pagine con altri esempi e storie, invece il mio tempo è finito, il confine del mio ragionamento si avvicina e mentre lo scorgo, cerco di capire se ho selezionato gli esempi e le parole adatte. Il gioco sta tutto qua. Se ha funzionato me lo direte voi.
