Il 2026 è segnato da una ricorrenza storica per Biella: con quest’anno sono trascorsi esattamente 1200 anni dalla prima attestazione scritta del nome della città. Infatti il 10 luglio 826 gli imperatori Ludovico il Pio e Lotario, con un documento sottoscritto in Germania, concedevano al conte Bosone alcuni beni che si trovavano nella “villa” che si chiamava “Bugella” - nome latino di Biella. Sebbene le origini della città si facciano risalire a tempi ben più lontani, il suddetto diploma imperiale rappresenta il più antico documento nel quale compare il nome del capoluogo.

A distanza di dodici secoli l’Amministrazione Comunale di Biella, attraverso una coprogettazione sinergica con DocBi - Centro Studi Biellesi, ha promosso un programma corale, realizzato in sinergia con partner istituzionali ed enti del terzo settore.

Le celebrazioni sono iniziate venerdì 10 luglio 2026, esattamente 1200 anni dopo la firma del diploma imperiale, con l’inaugurazione della mostra che ha esposto per la prima volta nella storia, a Biella, l’antico documento. Questo, infatti, è oggi conservato presso l’Archivio di Stato di Parma: qui, in seguito alle soppressioni napoleoniche degli enti ecclesiastici, vi confluì l’archivio del monastero di San Sisto di Piacenza, fondato da Engelberga d’Alsazia, moglie dell’imperatore Ludovico II, figlio di Lotario, dove era conservato anche il documento in oggetto.

La mostra è realizzata grazie al supporto e alla collaborazione del gruppo Sella, di Banca Patrimoni Sella & C. e della sua Direzione Artistica all’interno degli spazi espositivi del Palazzone in Via dei Seminari 3, come proseguo di una collaborazione con il Comune di Biella che nel 2025 ha anche visto l’apertura della mostra “Dialoghi”. Il percorso espositivo, frutto di un’approfondita ricerca storica effettuata da Danilo Craveia del DocBi, e composto anche attraverso il coinvolgimento dei ragazzi delle scuole Liceo “G. e Q. Sella”, Liceo “A. Avogadro” ed ITIS “Q. Sella”, ha “esploso” il documento in tutte le sue parti per illustrarne forma, contenuti e relazioni al più ampio pubblico possibile. In mostra sono esposti anche reperti provenienti dalla sezione archeologica del Museo del Territorio Biellese. L’iniziativa è sostenuta anche dal Comitato Bicentenario Quintino Sella 2027, proseguendo un percorso avviato lo scorso anno con la mostra “Quintino Sella. Lo statista con gli scarponi”, allestita in occasione della 96ª Adunata Nazionale degli Alpini svoltasi a Biella.
